I wanted to show you the packaging. This meal can be reheated in the microwave or sous-vided, in a pot with warm water. In the case of this meal, there isn't much of a difference, but I tend to choose to the pot with warm water, as that is how the food was cooked in the first place.
I do consider myself an expert on crab cakes, having spent my college years living in the Chesapeake Bay area. You are an expert too, then I am sure you can appreciate a huge crab cake made from fresh, lump, crab meat. In my opinion, that is one of the best regional foods someone can enjoy.
The Home Bistro crab cake is far from that experience. It is not 100% crab, and there is some filler and imitation crab meat in there, but that is not to say this crab cake is not good, because it is. I would just hate to have another crab cake gourmand order these and feel disappointed. In fairness, a real Chesapeake Bay Crab cake goes for about $15 to $20 for one these days, and it's well worth it. I bought this meal for about $10.50, so I did temper my expectations. I suspect the crab meat that is used in this meal is canned, as it has that same hint of flavor you would get from a can of surf clams.
There are some authentic crab cakes available online, but you have a hard time finding one on the menu of meal delivery service. As far as second tier crab cakes go, this one is the best, in my opinion. What separates this crab cake from the other is not the crab cakes, but the Lobster Sauce. If Home Bistro sold this Lobster Sauce, I would by a lifetime supply of it and store it my freezer forever. It is that good, and I promise you that you will feel the same way.
The taste of fresh, real jumbo lump crab meat, may be missing in the cake, but the Lobster Sauce truly comes from a long reduction of steamed lobsters. I am quite impressed how they did that, because the lobster is not lost to the heavy cream and spices. In fact, they play second fiddle to the lobster broth in perfect harmony.
The Roasted Corn is good. In the old days, this meal came with a side of asparagus tips too. Today, you can see on the picture, there is about one asparagus stem (no tips) chopped up and added to the corn. Home Bistro should update the picture they have on their website, which still shows the side of asparagus.
But I'm nit-picking, really. In summary, I would recommend this meal because it is a good value, and it does have a respectable portion size. The Lobster Sauce is worth it's weight in gold, and worthy of adding to your just for that experience.
